Achi was born in Kham, Tibet, and received his name from the Drikung Thil Monastery in Central Tibet, founded by Lord Jigten Sumgon and now being rebuilt after its destruction during the Cultural Revolution. In 1959, his family escaped into India after a gruelling three and a half month journey across the Himalayas.
Between 1961 and 1970, he was one of just four boys chosen among hundreds of Tibetan refugee children in Mussoorie to study at Wynberg Allen High School. He went on to attend Christ College, Bangalore, from 1970 to 1974, working alongside American missionaries to establish two hostels for children from the Tibetan refugee communities of South India.
After completing his BA from Bangalore University, Achi was chosen by HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu Order, to serve as his Private Secretary and English Interpreter through His Holiness's first two World Dharma Peace Tours, a role he carried out for seven years at Rumtek Monastery, Sikkim.
In 1981, Achi and his family settled in Washington DC, where he went on to co-found the Tibetan Meditation Center in 1982 and the Drikung Dharma Surya Buddhist Center in 2011. Both centers have hosted revered teachers including HH the 14th Dalai Lama, HH Gyalwa Drikungpa Chetsang and Yogi Master HE Kyabje Garchen, in keeping with his belief that the spread of Buddha Dharma can guide the world towards lasting peace.
